Your Complete Guide to Dressing for Your Boudoir Session with Hannah Rachael Photography.
Let's talk about one of the most exciting parts of your session prep... what you are going to WEAR. This is your moment to feel completely luxurious and irresistibly yourself. Whether you gravitate toward delicate French lace or sleek minimal sets... there is something out there that was made for your body and your energy. Let's find it.
1. First, lets learn the different types of lingerie...
Teddy's, corsets, and garters. OH MY!
We all know the famous two-piece matching bra and pantie set. It's the iconic Victoria's Secret's look but what other inspirations are out there?
The Teddy/ Bodysuit. One of my absolute favorites for boudoir. A teddy hugs every curve and holds everything in beautifully while you move through poses. Look for sheer lace finishes or delicate cutouts for something truly editorial.
The Sexy Cupless Shelf - A true showstopper. Lifts and frames without covering... which makes for incredibly sensual images. Pair with a garter set and matching briefs for the full look. Playful promises is iconic for this silhouette...
Bralettes and Sets. The most wearable category and honestly the most versatile. Sheer bralettes... structured lace sets... minimal triangle cuts. A matching bra and panty set truly can create so many variations of photos while keeping the private bits hidden but showing off more skin. Lounge Underwear does effortlessly beautiful sets that photograph gorgeously if youre .more sporty and Bluebella is another favorite for delicate lace & detail work.
Corsets & Bustiers. Retro & Fabulous for those vintage inspired sessions. Heavy boning... dramatic waist definition... pure drama. This style creates an hourglass silhouette that is undeniable on camera. La Perla and Agent Provocateur are the gold standard here... but Savage X Fenty offers stunning accessible options across all sizes. This can make it harder to pose but we can always 'strip tease' out of it and continue posing without it.
Baby Doll. Basically the cute little flared nightgown you begged your mom for freshman year in high school. Soft... flowy... romantic. While babydolls can sometimes be tricky in boudoir because of their volume ... a sleek silk chemise is an entirely different story. This is Sabrina Carpenter's signature look and works well with a 'feminine gaze' vibe. Look for things that have a little movement, see through fabrics, and fitted tops that show off your assets.
Bodystockings & Mesh For the client who wants maximum impact with a hint of everything. Full coverage that reveals everything. Wolford and Bluebella are exceptional for this aesthetic.
My new favorite obsession is body stockings especially this one from honey birdette.

2. Dressing for your body
Let's face it. We are all different. AND FIERCE AF!!
Our curves have different needs and we all have our favorite body parts. So what's best for you! Don't worry, I'm not going to start calling your body a triangle or square. We are more than that.
Slim & Lovely: Keep it simple! Don't go for forced underwire bras and lots of padding. Be true to you. High neckline bodysuits, bondage bralettes, and matching sets will be your best friend! Want to show off your waist and create a little drama? Grab a waist cincher and match it up to your top!! This will grab attention.
Athletic Hunnies:Show off everything you have worked for. Racerback cuts... minimalist sets... sleek bodysuits. Skims has incredible smooth bodysuits that are clean and elegant on athletic frames and Lounge Sets are perfect for those effortless cotton sets.
Busty Babes:Underwire is your best friend. Cupless shelf bras... structured bustiers with shoulder straps... anything that frames your neckline and draws the eye upward. Curvy Kate and Elomi are excellent for support with serious style.
Thick thighs save Lives: High leg underwear! I'm just gonna say it again! HIGH LEG EVERYTHING! You don't want to mess with boyshorts, that straight line across the tush will not be your friend. Stick to the high waisted trend and high leg arches. Wearing your undies high on your hips will make your legs appear longer. Don't be afraid of thongs either. Show it off if you got it!
Full & Curvy High leg cuts are everything. They elongate the legs and create the most beautiful silhouette on camera. High waisted briefs... thongs... anything that sits up on the hip rather than cutting across the thigh. Savage X Fenty is genuinely one of the best brands in the world for full figure lingerie. Playful Promises is another stunning option.
Sweet as an Apple: Teddy's and form fitted lingerie. You can rock the body stockings for full coverage, but why hide! You tend to go for the baby doll style to hide but you are beautiful! Show off everything! Wear that corset and those high waisted panties. Love yourself!

3. The iconic shots are always about the details...
Boudoir photography is all about the details. Your shoulder. The curve of your lower back. The line of your leg. With that in mind... always flip your piece over and look at the back before you buy.
Caged backs... intricate lace trim... delicate hook closures... strapping details... these are the elements that make an image feel like fine art rather than a snapshot. If the back is boring... keep looking.
Some of the most striking images I have ever created came from a single stunning back detail on a simple piece. Do not underestimate it.
4. Color, Color, Color!
The Power of Color
Color theory is not just for artists and designers... it is one of the most powerful tools a stylist has. The basic principle is simple. Every skin tone has an undertone sitting just beneath the surface... warm (golden... peachy... yellow) or cool (pink... rosy... blue). The colors you wear either fight that undertone or harmonize with it. In boudoir photography that harmony is everything. The right color does not just look pretty... it makes your skin luminous on camera.
Here is how to use it...
Fair & Cool Toned Skin Reach for the jewel tones. Deep emerald... sapphire blue... rich ruby and amethyst. These colors work with the cool pink and rosy tones in fair skin rather than washing them out. They create a striking contrast that makes the skin appear almost porcelain on camera. Icy pastels and crisp whites are beautiful here too. What to avoid... anything too close to your skin tone. Beige and blush can disappear entirely under studio lighting or make you look pale.
Medium & Warm Toned Skin This is where earth tones become your best friend. Mustard... burnt orange... terracotta... forest green... rich chocolate brown. These shades echo the golden warmth already living in your complexion and bring it forward in the most stunning way. Warm reds and deep coral are equally gorgeous. Think the full Honey Birdette jewel collection... those deep saturated hues were practically made for warm undertones.
Deep & Rich Skin The contrast is the magic here. Gold... ivory... deep crimson... champagne... burnt sienna. Against deep rich skin these colors create a definition that is absolutely breathtaking on camera. Metallic fabrics are especially stunning... they catch light in a way that makes the whole image feel editorial. And for something truly dramatic... a sheer black lace over deep skin is one of the most jaw dropping combinations I have ever shot.
The one rule that overrides all of this?
Wear the color that makes you feel irresistible when you look in the mirror. Color theory is a guide... not a rulebook. Confidence reads louder than any color palette ever will.

05. Sizing...
This is non-negotiable. Never buy anything that fits too tight. You want fabric that breathes... moves... and drapes. When lingerie is too tight it creates lines and pulls that no one wants to see in their photos. Go up one size if you are between sizes. You want to be able to pull a strap down... pull on the waistbands... adjust freely without anything digging in. Comfort equals confidence equals stunning images. Watch out for cup sizes... too small can dig into us, too large can leave gaps. return whatever doesnt fit and find something that compliments you.
06. Wear What Feels Like YOU
This is the most important rule on this entire list. The most expensive lingerie in the world means nothing if you put it on and feel like you are wearing a costume.
If you are a silk slip and bare feet kind of woman... lean into that. If you are all fishnet and leather... bring it. If you want to wrap yourself in a cashmere robe and let it fall... that is its own kind of stunning.
Authenticity is the most luxurious thing you can wear. Everything else is just decoration.
7. Maybe its not even lingerie you need...
Let's face it. Lingerie may be too much for you. Maybe, you're more of a floppy oversized sweater kind of girl. Rocking some knee-high socks and sipping on some tea. You can lift it up, give a little tease and play with it as you like.
OR.
Maybe you think lingerie is played out. And you're looking for something a little different! Grab those fishnet tights, a crop top, and let's play!
Rolling around in the buff or show nothing while baring it all. Suggested nudes are the most popular in boudoir world. You look naked, but no one can see anything! Just the thought of what you're hiding is what makes it sexy.
08. Accessorize & Layer With Intention
This is where your session goes from beautiful to breathtaking. The lingerie is the foundation... but the layers and details built around it are what make an image feel editorial.
Layer Over
An oversized blazer worn open with nothing underneath is one of the most powerful looks you can bring in. A faux fur stole draped off one shoulder. A crisp white button down... half open... half untucked. A leather jacket thrown over delicate lace. The contrast between structured and intimate is endlessly striking on camera.
Layer Under
Thigh highs and a garter belt peeking beneath a silk robe. A sheer mesh bodysuit as a base under something more structured. These in between moments create some of the most stunning frames of an entire session.
The Details
One delicate necklace sitting at the collarbone. A stacked bracelet. An anklet. Heels... always heels... even a simple stiletto transforms your posture and the entire shape of your body in a pose.
And bring something that means something to you. A piece of jewelry with a story. Something borrowed. Something that makes you feel like the fullest version of yourself. Those are the details that make you cry when you see your gallery for the first time.
09. Where to Shop
Shopping Local? Nashville Has You Covered ( or uncovered ;) hehe )
If you are preparing for a boudoir session here in Nashville Tennessee and you want to shop in person before your shoot... you are in the right city. A few local boutiques worth knowing about are Darlin'... Nashville's only locally owned lingerie boutique... known for their inclusive sizing... complimentary bra fittings... and a carefully hand selected rotation of pieces that are all about texture and quality. Rebecka's Lingerie in Green Hills is a Nashville institution and one of the best places in the city for a proper professional fitting. And if you are looking for Italian luxury basics... Intimissimi at Green Hills Mall carries beautiful everyday sets that photograph elegantly.
As a Nashville boudoir photographer I always love when my clients come in wearing something they found locally and fell in love with. There is something extra special about that. If you need help narrowing down what to bring to your session... reach out. Helping my clients feel completely prepared and completely themselves before they ever walk through my studio door is part of what I do.
